About the Artist, Dan Crowell
Dan Crowell is a pastel portrait and courtroom sketch artist. He initiated his studies in a pastel portrait art course from his instructor Carol Ann Craig. Ms. Craig was otherwise known in the art world as “Calonie.” Ms. Craig instructed portrait artists at Six Flags Over Texas. Crowell subsequently studied portrait oil painting from one of Dimitri Vail’s star students, Timothy Norman. Mr. Vail remains the premier portrait artist of Hollywood stars, like Bob Hope and Johnny Carson.
To Crowell's credit, he was commissioned by some highly celebrated individuals. Along with his artistic skills, he is a talented singer who has performed many roles with the Dallas Opera Chorus for many years. While with the company, the chorus commissioned him to paint Nicola Rescignio, the Artistic Director. Many dignitaries were present at the unveiling, including the Regional President of the American Guild of Musical Artists and John Ardoin, Music Critic for the Dallas Morning News. Recentley, the legendary opera star, Frederica von Stade, commissioned him to produce a pastel portrait of her two granddaughters.
In April of 2007, Dan Crowell won first place in the National Arts Program, in the “works on paper” category.
In the recent years, Dan Crowell worked as a courtroom sketch artist for many of the major news stations. Crowell's sketches have appeared on local news stations Fox 4 News, NBC 5, WFAA 8, and KTVT 11. Furthermore, his sketches were presented on national stations Fox News, CBS, ABC 20/20, CBS Inside Edition, CNN, ESPN, Telemundo, and Le Journal de Québec. Additionally, Crowell's sketches were published in The Washington Post and The Dallas Morning News. Crowell worked alongside the famous courtroom sketch artist, Gary Myrick, and Greg Conlin. He continues creating works for whoever desires to commission him and is receiving work from several news affiliates.
Not long ago, Crowell studied portrait drawing from Greg Conlin. Mr. Conlin is a noted courtroom artist who did the courtroom sketches for the high-profile “Darlie Routier” trial in Dallas. In addition, Crowell has been under the tutelage of Sarah King. Ms. King is listed as one of the top ten portrait artists in Texas and a protégé of the famous portrait artist Daniel E. Greene.
Over the years, Dan Crowell continued enhancing his artistic skills. He studied from some of the most talented artists and art instructors. Crowell maintained a passion for art throughout his life.
